Residential Electricity Fuel Cost Charge Cap
Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC), in partnership with the Cayman Islands Government (CIG), is pleased to support residential customers through the Fuel Cost Relief Programme, an initiative designed to help reduce the impact of higher fuel costs during the summer period when electricity consumption is typically at its highest.
Under the programme, eligible residential customers will receive relief on fuel costs associated with electricity consumption from June through September, with the corresponding bill credits appearing on customer bills received between July and October.
CUC will apply a residential electricity fuel cost charge cap of CI$0.18/kWh.
- The cap applies to residential customers who consume between 100 kWh and 3,500 kWh per month.
- Only the first 2,000 kWh of consumption will be capped.
- Relief will be applied automatically to eligible bills; no application is required.
- The relief is not applicable for CORE or DER customers.
How the Fuel Cost Relief Credit Works
The Fuel Cost Relief Program helps reduce the impact of higher fuel costs by applying a credit when the fuel cost rate exceeds the program ceiling of $0.18 per kWh.
For example, if the fuel cost rate is $0.195054 per kWh, the difference of $0.015054 per kWh is paid by CIG with this relief programme. Customers receive a credit based on this amount and their eligible electricity consumption.
Example 1: Customer Uses 1,300 kWh
Since the customer's usage is below 2,000 kWh, all 1,300 kWh qualify for the credit.
1,300 kWh × $0.015054 = $19.57 credit
This customer would receive a Fuel Cost Relief Credit of $19.57 on their bill.
Example 2: Customer Uses 3,000 kWh
The program provides assistance on the first 2,000 kWh only.
2,000 kWh × $0.015054 = $30.11 credit
Although the customer used 3,000 kWh, the credit is limited to the first 2,000 kWh, resulting in a Fuel Cost Relief Credit of $30.11.
Charges are billed in the month following consumption. For example, consumption during June will appear on your July bill, and so on. You will first see the fuel cost cap on your statement issued in July 2026 as "CIG Fuel Cost Relief".
